NAMASAGALI INTERGRATED SECONDARY SCHOOL

Background:

In one of the community mobilization meetings held by Kabaale Moses as the representative of Namasagali sub-county to the Kamuli District Council in 2009 in one of the villages of Namasagali Sub County, one of the major issues raised by local community members was lack of opportunities for the education of orphaned children. Six women narrated the heavy burden they were shouldering to raise children who do not go to school.

In this meeting Kabaale Moses accepted to sponsor the education of one child from each of these widowed mothers. Four of the beneficiary children were in Primary Four class and two were in Primary Two. As these children were in primary Kabaale Moses considered it as wasted effort if they stopped at primary level without attaining secondary education. The sub-county had only one secondary school which was very expensive for the ordinary parents. He therefore started working on a bigger plan of establishing a secondary school to absorb the orphans he was sponsoring in primary and other needy children in the 43 villages of Namasagali sub-county and the neighbouring areas. Due to the huge cost involved in buying building materials Kabaale Moses decided to produce the building materials like bricks by himself.

The school started in 2013 on one of the verandars of a building in Namasagali trading centre with the four orphaned children whom he had sponsored in primary and 10 others. With the support of 10 volunteer teachers identified from the then Namasagali University the school started progressing. Soon the community developed much interest and some members donated cement, more bricks, sand and roofing wood and soon the construction of a 2 classroom block began and was completed within a short time.
It has not been easy but today out of its humble beginning the school has become a shelter for 156 students most of whom coming from homes living under struggling situations. There is a big change in our students as compared to when we identified them. They are very comfortable at the school.

SCHOOL CURRICULUM:

Namasagali Intergrated S.S teaches subjects approved by the Ugandan Ministry of Education and Sports and the National Curriculum Development Centre (NCDC). We teach Mathematics, English, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, History and Political Education, Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Christian Religious Education (CRE), Islamic Religious Education (IRE), Entrepreneurship, Agriculture, Physical Education, Kiswahili and Art and Design. In addition the school teaches life skills to students to prepare them to become productive citizens in society.

SCHOOL CLUBS:

Namasagali Intergrated S.S has encouraged and supported its students to establish clubs and associations which have helped them to build social skills. The clubs at the school include Patriotism Club, Environment Conservation Club, Debating Club, Christian Fellowship Club, Muslim Association and the Academic Discussion Group. Besides developing social skills these clubs have created awareness of their responsibility to contribute efforts to adress some of the most pressing challenges in our country, Uganda.

WHY WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT:

Namasagali Intergrated Secondary School is a small school with meager resources but doing very good work to support the free education of needy children in Namasagali Sub county one of Uganda’s remotest areas. We base on fees paid by the non-sponsored students and a few income generating projects to sustain the programs of the school. However the Uganda Shs. 80,000 (About 21 dollars) per term paid by the non-sponsored students is very little and yet few complete payment.

• We need your support to construct a dormitory for girls.
We have realized that in a rural setting girls who commute from home to school and then back home rarely complete school. On their way home they are always disturbed by men and soon succumb to pressure. However girls in Boarding are closely monitored and therefore chances of completing studies are very high. In Uganda a dormitory that can accommodate about 60 girls costs about $18000 Dollars when it is complete with beds and wash rooms. Any small contribution towards supporting us have a dormitory for girls is much appreciated.

• Education Sponsorship for needy children.

We have continued to receive requests from widowed mothers requesting for education support to their orphaned children and therefore we need support so as to take on atleast 100 needy students for this academic year 2022. Most of the needy students we identify report to school without a mattress, few books and also lack uniform. Therefore regular support can enable us increase our scope of secondary education sponsorship.

• We need your support to build a classroom block.
Currently we have only 2 classrooms of the recommended size (22feet by 25 feet) for Senior One and Senior Two. The rest of the classes , Senior Three and Four study in two tiny rooms which only accommodate 20 students each. We could take on as many vulnerable youth as possible but lack adequate study rooms. A 2 classroom block in Uganda costs about $10,000 dollars complete with furniture. Any contribution however small it is is highly appreciated.

Facilities for e-learning.
The New Lower Secondary Curriculum which is being implemented in all secondary schools in Uganda is based on internet research. With only one computer we are struggling to fulfill the effective teaching of the new curriculum. It requires a projector, a heavy duty printer and at least 10 computers to enable us conduct e-learning. We welcome any gift in form of a new/used computer (s), a projector and other ICT tools like TV and Camera which are a requirement under the new curriculum.

Thank you for donating to give the children and youth in Namasagali sub-county a future.
